Most of Nevada’s population live in cities, and only 13% of public school students attend schools in rural areas and socioeconomic challenges are generally low, ranking Nevada 40th in the country in need of rural education attention and improvement. Unavailability of data meant that we could not compute several student diversity indicators, but a 5% English Language Learner student population was 13th highest in the nation. Schools and districts are very large, scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress are among the lowest in the U.S., and the distribution of funds among rural school districts within the state is far from equitable.
