Kansas School Funding Coalition Reorganizing

The coalition of school districts that brought the Montoy school funding suit in Kansas wants to reopen the lawsuit in an attempt to stop continued decreases in school funding. State aid increased initially after the 2004 and 2005 Montoy decisions, but current funding levels have returned to pre-Montoy levels.
 
A series of informational meetings has been held across the state. Districts have until November to decide whether to join the suit.
 
State education leaders have also expressed concern that legislators plan to consolidate schools to deal with rising costs. The legislature has already cut capital outlay funding to schools, an equity provision instated after the lawsuit.
